Barnegat is a coastal town located in Barnegat Township in the southern portion of portion of Ocean County, New Jersey.   Barnegat Township is comprised of the unincorporated areas of Barnegat and Ocean Acres and has a total area of 40.8 square miles.  Barnegat, which encompasses only 2.7 miles of the townships total area, is a Jersey Shore community situated on the mainland within the Pine Barrens, a pine forest.   Barnegat was named for the Barnegat Inlet and Barnegat Bay which boarder the town.  There is easy access to major roadways like Route 9 and The Garden State Parkway.  Nearby public transportation via the New Jersey Transit Bus system is also available with service to Atlantic City, New Jersey.  

Barnegat residents enjoy recreational activities such as swimming, boating, jet-skiing, crabbing and fishing in Barnegat Bay and the Barnegat Inlet.   In addition it is just a short drive to many retail shopping centers and restaurants, as well as the many activities on the beautiful beaches and fun-filled boardwalks of the Jersey Shore.   Nearby points of interest include Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ, Tuckerton Seaport in Tuckerton, NJ, beautiful golf and yacht clubs, plus Barnegat Lighthouse, annual festivals and live entertainment at the numerous restaurants and shops of Long Beach Island..
