Toms River, a portion of Toms River Township, is centrally located in Ocean County, New Jersey and is both the largest township in the county and the county seat. It is located 70 miles south of Manhattan, New York and 55 miles east of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a total area of 53 square miles. Toms River is situated mostly on the mainland with two beaches located along a portion of the Barnegat Peninsula that separates the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay. Toms River Township also includes several additional beach towns like Ortley Beach, Normandy Beach, and Ocean Beach. The New Jersey Transit bus station located in downtown Toms River serves commuters and recreation seekers with service to Newark, NJ, Atlantic City, NJ and New York City. In addition to the large public school system of Toms River Regional School District, Monsignor Donovan High School, Ocean County’s only Catholic high school, and Ocean County College in partnership with Kean University are both located in Toms River.
Downtown Toms River hosts numerous annual events such as the New Jersey Chili and Salsa Cook- off and the New Jersey Ice Cream Festival, as well as the second largest Halloween parade in the world. Major concerts and other entertainment events are held at the Pinebelt Arena located adjacent to Toms River North High School and it is just a short drive across the bridge to enjoy the many activities on the beautiful beaches and fun-filled boardwalks of the Jersey Shore.
As of the 2010 U.S. Census the total population of Toms River was 91,239. The climate during the summer months becomes humid and subtropical with the average daily high temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit in July. Winters are somewhat cold with daily temperatures reaching an average high of 40 degrees in January. The median age of residents was 43 in 2010 and the median annual household income was $71,934.00. Although there are homes for sale in almost any price range including numerous luxury and waterfront properties, the average home price in Toms River is approximately $227,000.00 making it one of the most affordable areas to live along the Jersey Shore.
